SushiComa

Harbour

We go to bed, leaving today's burdens with today and count our blessings.

All our ships are back in harbour. Not unharmed but all are accounted for and now safe.

Shoes2015

I have 12 pairs of shoes, sandals and boots, all seasons and uses included.
I also have two pairs of indoor slippers, one pair still in storage as the pair currently in use still can be mended.

Out of these 12 pairs, there are approximately four pairs that I never use. They are remnants from my previous affluent lifestyle and my office days. I try to wear them at least once every year to know that they still fit, function and are there for any emergency needs that may occur. Their style is classic and they are of good quality. I have room for them so I will keep them in storage.
I  need no shoes and I have no shoes on the wish list.

(I also have a pair of running shoes but lets not talk about their use.)

Food&co

We spend around €400 a month on food for two.
But this is not a food budget, let me call it a Food & co. budget.
The sum actually includes almost everything. At least everything that is bought for both of us.
Food, wine, toilet paper, cleaning, utensils, even some hygiene products.
Shared fun is included, also dinner, drinks or coffee out.
Cost for private hygiene such as shampoo for me, bath oil for the man and our lenses are not included. Nor do we share costs for things that are only done alone, such as sports.

Travels together usually has their own cost calculations but we do share equally what we do together then too. Each eat what they want (we usually eat off each others plates anyway).

Private sweets are not included if they are bought to be eaten alone. This works for us. I can eat gravlax and salmiak dropjes when I am home alone and he will have just as many beers as he pleases when he goes out with friend. Although actually more often the other way around.
He spends all the rest of his money as he pleases and so do I.
And I do.
Oh man, do I spend it.

Kantoor

Ik heb een nieuwe kantoor gefonden. Perfect lacaatie, still, warm en goedkoep.
Interessante mensen zitten dabij.

Blij.
Zeg het nog een keer. Blij.

Heating

Two broken heating systems in one day. I am almost impressed by my own ability.
To be fair, one of them has probably never worked and the other is only leaking.

My rented office room is not making me happy. We have given notice and I'll be out in a month.
The difficulty to find something new made me reconsider and thinking that I should probably stay.
Half a day of the neighbours chitter-chatter and the unapologetic information that there will be no heating in the office made me leave. Unfortunately I was in such bad mood that I ruined my own evening.

In the home office I noticed leaking water. Hurrah for rentals. They will be coming in a few days to fix it. If the leaking increases, just call and help will come at once.
I will add Keep an eye on office radiator to the daily office task sheet.

An odd however very suitable alternative for a new office out of house has presented itself.
It has heating.
As of now.

Not-job-you

You are not your job.

I was my job for many years. I was my job so much that I lost all other identities.
I got allergies and hives when my job was threatened.
It took almost two years to find a non-job identity.

Now, I can almost unable to tell what I do for work ouside the office.

Shop-challenge

I live across the street from a food shop. It belongs to a chain (or is a frachaise of a chain?) of food shops. There are many more in town. We like this one the least. It targets clients with a different lifestyle than ours.

This week, starting today Monday, we start the challenge. No shopping in that chain of
shops for one week, ending the following week Monday. We have stocked up a little, although by going shopping an another supermarket. We are also allowed to shop in any other shop belonging to any other chain than this one. We will aim to shop in the independent shops (oh yeah, there are plenty of other shops). However, the primary target is to change our shopping patterns.

The room mate used to go shopping before every meal, every meal, every day. I have had days when I've been there three times in a day. It is time for change.

Signalur2

ERE2

Decluttering and managing stuff
2008 I packed up the content of a house, locked it into the attic and rented out the house. I left that country with seven moving boxes and two suitcases. I moved into a furnished apartment and I bought the content.
2010 I moved the content to a much larger apartment and added some finds from the streets and garbage containers.
2013 I emptied one house with the help of a charity organisation and the waste sorting station. I left that country in a van with a chest of drawers, some ten moving boxes and my clothes.
2014 I emptied the first house and moved the necessities into 23 sqm. Four boxes and some family furniture went to my mother's house. Seven boxes and a carpet roll left that county.

The emptying primarily took time but it was a lot less painful than I though it would be. It was not painless but now I am free from my past clutter. I still have memories, photos and some lovely items I really love. I have almost nothing that makes me sad or weighs me down. Everything I own is either unimportant beyond its purpose or is something I would like to keep forever.

Now 2015, I own very little furniture and all would be donated when moving countries the next time.

I could probably move myself anywhere within a few days and with only a regular rented van.
And still, surely there are more things I could live without?

Tabberas

Font

First date:
- Let's go for a coffee..
- OK, how about that place?
- Oh no, the font is too ugly.
And although I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever heard, it was not a joke.
We ended up drinking coffee in a place using a nice font.

Since then, I have slowly started to learn about fonts and their influence on our lives.
I do not have a favourite but we can both understand this mans obsession w: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-31534032

Pengar

Sunglasses

So be without.

So your sunglasses broke.
If you were a parent, you would have said: Now we have to buy you a new pair.
Possibley adding the scolding: You have to take better care of your things.

As a child you would hear the message that you will get an exciting new pair of sunglasses if you break the boring old ones immediately.

Do you treat yourself as a child? That is an expensive lifestyle.

Be without when you break them. Take the consequences of your actions. Take the chance to learn a lesson to take better care of your ghings. Take ghe chance to give yourself some time to regret not taking better care of your things.

No sunglasses? That is to bad. This is your time to change, to find a substitute. Use an umbrella instead. Wear a cap! Dig out the od pair of sunglasses from five years ago that you barely remembere that you have. Do they look stupid? Well, you broke your sunglasses. Take the consequences...

Buy a new pair? Of course you can do that - Write it on your Wish List. Wait 30 days. Evaluate if you really have to, really need them. (Although, if you have an old pair, you probably do not really Need them even if you want a new pair.)
Would you buy a new pair? They are fragile after all. Perhaps €2 is what you should spend and not more. You just proved that you apparently break your things and you should not spend more money on this kind of product.
Or be without? Or break all rules and buy what you really really want and then hold on go them for ag least ten years (2€ a year for ten years is still only €20 and you may change your style in that time, even if you do not break them. Look at those old, ugly ones? How much did you spend on those? How long ago was that? What is the annual cost for them?)
Maybe you just want and not need and tomorrow you will do fine without them.
At least wait until tomorrow to start looking for a new pair.

As of 2015, I still have that €2 impulse buy of sunglasses from 2011 when the new country and the new lifestyle showed that I really needed a pair, not only wanted them.

Monkey

Monkeys are to have a good year this year together with the goats.
An earth monkey is identified by being frank, optimistic and fearless.
My colleagues are all on holiday the next week, they go home and the country closes. Except for transportation which will be a nightmare.

Laufen

Kostenlos.

Buying is bad

The grandmother of my colleague used go say that buying was embarressing.
Buying showed ghat something in the house had been broken, was worn out or could not be mended.
Buying was just a general sign of careelessness.

She came obviously from a time when couples set ut a house, usually when they married. Then they lived with what they had for the rest of their lives. They cared for it and kept each item as well as they could.

Do we have to be much different?

Pens

I like pens. Pens and pencils are natural parts of me. When I hold a good pen, it becomes part of me.
Never lend me a pen. I do not mean to steal it but I will leave with it. It is now my pen and I have completely forgotten that it used to be your pen.
Who cares, it is just a pen, right? And now it is my pen.

After many years travelling for work, visiting offices, konference centers and places filled with books an papers I have aquired an unnatural amount of pens.
I do not collect pens and I do not need hundreds of pens. I can not just throw them out so a few years back, I started an ambitious pen-clearing project.
All pens were collected from bags and around the house. I never counted them but I did sort them.
The really awful pens that I did not like at all where kept apart. The nice pens where placed in ghe "office-material" box, then still not a box as it is now, but half a book case.
A normal amount of the awful pens where then placed available in bags and around the house.
The joy of using them up brightened my day. I could then go an shop for a new pen among the nicer ones in the office box.

As of 2015, I still have a stupid amount of pens. But today I finished an especially viscious one and could finally throw it out. It has brightened my day considerably.

Finding a place to stay

Socks2015

Inventory of socks:
3 long, 1 long wool & 1 long happy sock.
9 office and 1 happy sock.

4 short sockies for summer.
2 pantyhose socks and 3 panty hose as well as a pair of fish net stockings that I pretend I do not own.
2 leggings live in the same box.

Nothing goes on the wish list. I have everythig sock-like that I can need for sny mood and all shoes. Unless anything changes (what?).

Valentijn

Valentijn has golden hair and only likes you if you ignore him.
I do and we like eachother very much.
He brings me flowers and toy cars. He is smarter than a five year old.
He has nothing to do with today.
He is not a cat but he could very well have been

Akhnaten

Eknaton, Eckneton, Akhanaten, Amenhotep IV, Amenhotphis IV must have been a lovely child around 1350 BCE as he has so many names. His wife only has one but we know her better, Nefertiti.
Philip Glass only calls him Akhnaten but he does it for almost three hours. In ancient Egypt, some English and in the oddest Flemish. Whatever he was, he was not from Flandern.

I didn't think I would like it, I was only doing my girlfriend duty, but I did. Good, now we can share that too.

5

We celebrate our anniversary by going back to where we first kissed. Appropriately the 2.5 hr train ride took almost six hours. Welcome back to the beginning. Remember what it was like? Crazy, cold train rides between the countries? The weekly train confusions? They are now but a fleetin' memory. Today we had three delays. But we got to wait in a town along the line where I have never waited before. I did't know there was another town left to wait in. Exciting.

cummings

if you like my poems let them walk in the evening a little behind you

then people will say
Along the road i saw a princess pass on her way to meet her lover (it was toward nightfall) with tall and ignorant serevants

                                                                                    e.e. cummings

Tomorrow it will be five years since I became a princess.

Clothes

I have always cared for my clothes. I probably learned it from home and it is something that comes easily.
I hang all laundry neatly and use many plastic hangers. All socks are smoothed and hung straight over the line. Each piece is positioned to dry as straight as possibly. All trousers, also jeans, are dried hanging on a hanger. I have always folded all laundry directly out of a tumble dryer, one garment at the time. Dry laundry is folded and put away at the same time, except what needs ironing or mending (or both).
Everything that needs to be ironed, both wet and dry, is hung on a red hanger. The red hangers are only used for un-ironed garments.
Everything with a rip or a tear is mended before ironing.
All garments are ironed at the same time and then placed on a normal (black) hanger.
Everything is put back in the wardrobe neatly.
All the above is almost true.

Goethe

Wo Goethe niemals wohnte.

Blog-reading

I am procrastinating my own life while enjoying reading about other peoples lives.
Especially those who make income passively though blog's in order to sustain their frugal lifestyles  And so I write a blog post about it. Continuing the perpetuing mobility.

I have a life to live - a to do list to work on - and a wonderful city to explore.

Glass

Babylon

"The protestant historians claim that [it] was invented by the Catholics, and that [it] was apochryohal. We ourselves consider that it was authentic. Failing the mystique of the Sacrament, which they rejected, the mystery of the Blood of France, to which they remained attached, was reconized by the Hugenots, which allowed the more fanatical mong them to defend as legitimate the dethronement of the Valois, who, having prostituted themselves to Babylon, had bevome unworthy of reining. This should never be forgotten [and Condé hoped to take advantage of it.]"

Sy-kit

Wallace

Wallace House opened in Hereford House, London in 1890. It was formed in the main by Richard, fourth Marwuess of Hertford but largly increased by his son, Sir Richard Wallace (1818-1890). The collection is richly presented by the arts of France in the eighteenth century, extended in sculpture back to the thirteenth century and forward in painting to the third quarter of the nineteenth.

The collection takes its character from the tastes and opportunities of the fourth Marquess, who lived in Paris and was a devotee of the arts of France in the eighteenth century.

This is a polite way of expressing the taste and the content in this collection. The quote comes from The Wallace Collectn Catalogues Pictures and Drawings (illustrations), printed for the trustees by William Clowes Ltd and sold at Hereford House, London, 1953. The illustrations are grainy in black and white.

The catalogue is lovely but I have no idea where I picked up. More amazing is that it has survived the two last house clearings and the last five years boxing of books. I have no wonder nobody wanted to buy if but I am glad that I still have it. I will keep it - although www.wallacehouse.com is almost as good and provides much better information.

With it, I can over-dose on putty and sentimental half naked shepardesses when ever I want to.

As well as adoringly obseve The Laughing Cavalier by Frans Hals, The Rainbow Landscape by My boy Rubens, some Velazques, some Rembrandts, a good Memling and a nice collection of the lowlandeers - some de Hooch, de Vois, de Hondecoeter and van Ruisdael.

Ironing

My wardrobe is so simplified by now that I hardly ever iron anymore. I feel that when I do iron, it is more to give a sad garment yet another wear than that the garment needs it. Maybe it is not true, but it is a good help to iron t-shirts that look a little sad. When folded in the wardrobe, they look so pretty. It always looks like I have a lot of tops and do not need anything. They are a joy to wear again, all smooth and crisp. Especially sad t-shirts may also receive a dose of starch in the front. It immediatly feels better than new.

February jewellery

February is the month for the annual use and inventory of everything in my jewellery box.
Right now I have 6 pair of earrings (not counting the funny ones), 3 long necklaces, 7 short necklaces, 8 pendants, 8 bracelets and 4 brooches (plus the Christmas brooch). I also have a nest of stings and leather straps for the pendants but no chain. (I have a 60 cm gold chain on my wish list but I never seem to want it enough.) I wear my ring and my watch every day.

There are still pieces left that I do not wear and that hold pure sentimental value. Family valuables not included. However, it has been quite a journey.
2010 was the first time I had this target in February.

I got my first box for anything jewellery in 2008. I bought it in Shanghai and it was the prettiest thing ever. The silk was not acid-free and all silver oxidised. 2011 I bought a bettered replacement in a second hand shop for three euros. It lasted until 2013 when I cleared again and tried to fit thing into two boxes that just were too small. 2014 everything moved into a lockable box my father made me in the early1970s. With adaptions, the tray from the previous box was fitted with the cushions from a ring holder I got for my birthday 2013 and included in the current box. The rest was tossed.

Teeth

I like my teeth. I intend to keep them as long as I can, hopefully all my life.
I brush at least twice a day, and mothwash regularly. Floss and toothpick every week. I go to the dentist every 18 months, if he will see me, otherwise the dental hyginist.
My teeth are on my list of prized possessions and also on my list of targets under health.
